Judith M. Bessel

Having been called to the bar in 2017, she brings a wealth of varied legal experience having worked at such firms as Braithwaite Boyle and Aarbo-Fuldauer. She assisted a literacy challenged immigrant mother in securing an order to prevent her violent abusive husband from having contact with her and her children. She secured a summary conviction for an aboriginal client originally charged with armed robbery. She also engaged in pleadings that that eventually  resulted in bank robbery charges being dropped against an immigrant whose visa expired.

Before embarking on her legal career, Judith was a professional violinist with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, where she honed her discipline and creativity. Born and raised in New Jersey, she earned her B.Mus. from Temple University in Philadelphia before winning an audition with the CPO and relocating to Calgary. Judith's passion for law was ignited by the legal needs of her friends and family, leading her to pursue an LLB with honors from the University of London.

She further enhanced her qualifications with a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Natural Resources, Energy, and Environmental Law from the University of Calgary. Her dedication to justice is evident through her involvement in various legal projects, including Student Legal Assistance and Pro Bono Students Canada. Judith has successfully represented clients in Provincial Court, the Court of Queen’s Bench, and the Alberta Court of Appeal. Her primary practice interests include, family law, criminal law, aboriginal law, landlord tenant disputes, medical law, civil litigation, and alternative energy law. Outside of her legal practice, Judith enjoys mountain biking, backpacking, cross-country skiing, and martial arts, where she holds a 3rd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. She is an active member of the Law Society of Alberta.
